Milton Keynes is the first UK city to get high-speed WiMax coverage. The British city is set to become the most technologically advanced metro in the United Kingdom after it agreed to have a high-speed WiMax wireless broadband network installed that would cover parts of the town.
UK-based Pipex (LSE: PXC) and Intel Corp. (Nasdaq: INTC) will install the WiMax wireless network through a joint-venture agreement in parts of Milton Keynes with WiMax, a medium-range sibling of the popular Wi-Fi technology covering kilometres rather than metres.
Both wireless technologies use radio frequency rather than conventional wires to access the Internet.
WiMax is seen as one of the main alternatives to the 3G networks European mobile phone operators bought six years ago for over $100 billion euros.
The WiMax network to be built in Milton Keynes is considered to a 'proving ground' for testing the application in a metro area.
