Microsoft Corporation announced details of the deal it has concluded with open source software company Novell Inc. to use subscription certificates of the latter's SUSE Linux Enterprise Service product. Under the agreement the two companies had signed on 2 November, Microsoft will pay Novell Inc. $240 million upfront for the subscription certificates, which it may sell, reuse or distribute.
The arrangement will allow customers to redeem a single or multi-year subscription for upgrades, updates and technical support from Novell.
Microsoft will also dedicate an additional $60 million over the next five years to market Linux and Windows products in virtualized scenarios. It will also spend another $34 million over five years on a sales force devoted primarily to marketing the offering.
Microsoft has agreed that for three years, it will not enter into an agreement with another Linux distributor to encourage adoption of Linux/Windows virtualization solutions through a Linux subscription certificate program.
