City chiefs turn blind eye to threat of terrorism

An article in PersonnelToday.com, discussed the conclusion that chief executives in the City of London are failing to make sure work places are adequately protected from the threat of terrorism, this is according to the commissioner of the City of London Police.

Commissioner James Hart said only 50% of businesses had adequate emergency plans, despite warnings from the police that a terror attack in the financial district of London was "only a matter of time".

In another article the site talks about research that shows that more than two-thirds of MPs want new smoking laws to cover all workplaces, without any of the proposed exemptions.

The government is currently proposing banning smoking in most workplaces in England, but with exemptions for pubs that do not serve prepared food and private members' clubs.

With all these restrictions and threats to the traditional business environment, it is only a matter of time before working from home becomes a significant business driver.

As we reported earlier in the month a resent study has shown that most workers work better early in the morning, before they would have traditionally started work.

The cost and time taken to travel to and from work each and every day seams to get longer and more expensive year in, year out.

With all these factors, it is only a matter of time before traditional business office environments are replaced by the “virtual office”, where staff work together, but not in the same location. With virtual office technology the ability to work anywhere, collaborate, interact and monitor staff is very easy.

I foresee a time when the traditional office environment where a receptionist/office assistant answers the phone, greets the guests and sorts the mail is a thing of the past.

Paper mail will be received to a mail centre that will scan it and distribute it to the relevant person electronically, phone calls will be received by a receptionist or group of receptionists that can be based at home in their home office, video conferencing will allow staff to interact visually and for face to face meetings offices/meeting rooms will be rented by the hour whenever and wherever they are required.

With VoIP telephone technology your office extension can ring for you wherever you are in the world. Your office will be wherever your PC can connect to the Internet, which with GPRS and 3G technology, can be just about anywhere.

So the for me the future is bright, the future is “virtual”.
