New diesel Rangey gets gag reflex

Range Rover has introduced a system to help prevent drivers filling up their diesel cars with petrol.

The Petrol Fuel Guard System is fitted to all new Range Rover TDV8 models and automatically stops unleaded from being poured into the tank.

The system works by sensing the thinner nozzle of an unleaded pump, which reaches deeper into the fuel filler neck. When it senses this, a shutter is activated that stops fuel from being released into the tank.

Range Rover says filling a diesel-powered car with petrol is becoming an increasing problem as diesel engines become more refined. The AA reports that it dealt with more than 100,000 incidents of cars being filled with the wrong fuel in 2005.
