Transport Secretary Douglas Alexander today confirmed the introduction of larger fines and penalty points for drivers caught talking on their mobile phones.

From 27 February, using a hard-held phone while driving will carry a £60 fixed-penalty fine and three points on a licence. Should a driver contest the penalty and go to court, a maximum fine of £1,000 could be imposed for car drivers and £2,500 for drivers of vans, lorries, buses or coaches.
