The United States hosts more than one third of all the websites that contain malicious code identified during 2006, according to the Security Threat Report 2007 published by security management solutions company Sophos.

The report also pointed out that the U.S. generated the highest number of spam mails in the world.

The report, released Monday, showed that servers hosted in the U.S. accounted for 34.2 per cent of the internet-based malicious code, while China took the second position with 31 per cent.

Ron O'Brien, senior security advisor at Sophos, said the U.S. market is undeniably a target for online criminal activity. More and more, organizations with U.S.-based websites are falling victims to targeted attacks.

The Russian Federation is a distant third in this category with 9.5 per cent of the malware located on servers in the countries of this region.
