Early man crossed the Alps to live in the 'Costa del Cromer' near Lowestoft 700,000 years ago, according to finds that represent the earliest record of human activity found so far in northern Europe.

More than 30 flint tools uncovered near the Suffolk seaside town of Lowestoft have been dated with the help of voles and snails to an unexpectedly balmy and ancient period. The find has stunned experts because it shows that our ancestors journeyed north of the Alps into northern Europe 200,000 years earlier than thought.
