AOL and Yahoo to Start Charging for E-mail Delivery

AOL and Yahoo have joined with the New York Times online in signing up for a new e-mail service from Goodmail Systems, a Mountain View, Calif. company that charges senders of e-mail for guaranteed delivery.

Goodmail Systems says it created what it calls CertifiedEmail 'to provide a safe and reliable class of email for the benefit of consumers, legitimate senders and mailbox providers.' But critics argue that it prohibits the free use of the Internet and is only a way to charge users more money.

Goodmail claims that its CertifiedEmail service will protect consumers from spam and fraudulent email messages. The search engines see it as a way of both blocking unwanted email and as a rich revenue source.
