An electronic petition on the Government’s E-Petitions website calls for the Prime Minister to use his influence to stop Microsoft Corp overcharging UK customers for its new Visa operating system.
The petition, which over 1,250 people signed in less than one day, will be sent to the Prime Minister’s office after it closes on 20 April. It was posted by Paul Milne.
The petition claims that Vista Ultimate, the premium version of the operating system, costs £350 in the UK but only £195 in the US.
The source of these figures is not given on the site, but the actual retail price of Vista varies significantly from supplier to supplier. According to the recommended retail prices on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk, Vista Ultimate is priced at $399.99 (£203) in the US, and £369.99 in the UK.
Vista Home Basic, the version for people who qualify for an upgrade to Vista, costs £99 in the UK and around 20% less in the US at $159 (£81).

Rip-off Britain for Microsoft Vista
ReplyDeleteHere we go again, we Brits are getting shafted over pricing, this time by Microsoft. According an e-petition on a government website that acts as a forum for public petitions, there is a "huge difference in the price that people in the US and the UK are paying for Windows Vista". It claims that Vista Ultimate (the premium version) costs £350 in the UK but can be bought for £150 ($298) in the US.
I checked out pricing at Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk and found that Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate is £193.27 ($379.99) in the US and £313.48 in the UK – that is a price hike of 62%!
But it is not just Windows Vista that has this problem Microsoft Office Professional costs £222.77 ($437.99) in the US whilst we are charged £437.99 in the UK – that’s a whopping 97% higher.
I have traditionally used Microsoft products for all my desktop needs, but now I am seriously looking to switch to Linux, especially as big players like IBM and Dell are providing such outstanding packages – with the operating system and office products for FREE.
I think it is time for me to switch!
