2006 beckons chip-implanted US passports

Starting next October, those applying for US passports will be surprised to find their identities carefully enshrined in radio frequency ID chips implanted in their “new” passports. The announcement that came on Tuesday, hoped to make US standards as close to the “globally interoperable' standards devised by the UN's International Civil Aviation Organization.
The chips that will permit the reading of passports using special machines, will themselves record personal data such as name, nationality, sex, date of birth or place of birth besides holding a digitized picture of the passport holder. At a later date they may even contain digitized fingerprints or even iris scans.
