Cayenne, French Guiana - An Ariane-5 rocket lifted off from a launch pad in South America on Wednesday and placed a US broadcasting satellite and an Indonesian telecommunications satellite into orbit.

The European rocket blasted off from the Kourou launch centre in French Guiana at 18:46 EST (2346 GMT), lighting up the cloudless night sky.

The Spaceway 2 satellite was released into geostationary orbit 27 minutes after lift-off, followed six minutes later by the Telkom 2 satellite, said Arianespace (ARS.YY), the commercial arm of the 13-country European Space Agency.
