The announcement made by the company from Redmond almost five months ago, in June that the following Office suite, momentarily known as Office 12, will introduce a new format, dubbed Open Office XML, really stirred things up and gave everyone a reason to comment. The decision has been even more shocking as Microsoft has announced that it will license this format for free to the software developers, which practically opens the way for a better compatibility with other suites like Open Office or Star Office. Microsoft today confirmed once again its intentions and sent the specifications of the new format to Ecma International, the European standardization organization.
